The Rise of the Gele

Let's begin with the man who helped bring the gele back into mainstream conversation.

Earlier this year, musician Keys the Prince released a song titled "Gele." To say it went viral would be an understatement. The song exploded across social media platforms, with TikTok leading the charge, where hundreds of thousands of videos have been created using its audio.

Many of these videos feature couples celebrating their weddings, with the song's now-iconic opening line, "I'm gonna marry a Nigerian tonight," serving as the focal point. They celebrate the beauty of intercultural marriages while showcasing the rich traditions and unique identities of both the bride's and groom's cultures.

What Is the Gele and What Does It Symbolise?

According to Google, the gele is a traditional headwrap worn by women for ceremonial occasions such as weddings, traditional engagements, and coronation ceremonies.

The gele can be tied in a variety of styles, with different designs often reflecting personal preference, regional traditions, or the significance of the occasion. While some styles have historically been associated with marital status or social standing, there is no universal style that definitively indicates whether a woman is married or single.

Although the exact origins of the gele are difficult to trace, as it predates photography and written documentation in many communities, the word itself comes from the Yoruba language. Historically, the gele served as a symbol of elegance, wealth, and social status, with elaborate styles often reserved for important celebrations and special occasions.

My Opinion on the Gele's Renaissance

As both an African and a lover of fashion, this resurgence has been a much-needed breath of fresh air. It's a reminder of just how beautiful African fashion truly is—how intricate, expressive, and deeply rooted in culture it can be.

Our traditional clothing tells stories. It reflects our heritage, our creativity, and the richness of our continent. Seeing younger generations embrace pieces like the gele fills me with excitement, and I can't wait to see how this renewed appreciation for African fashion continues to evolve.
